Broad
Causeway

Constructed
over the Intracoastal Waterway and opened to vehicular
traffic in 1951, the Broad Causeway toll roadway offers
a convenient and fast route between the mainland's North
Miami area and Bay Harbor Islands, as well as the Town's
neighboring beach communities. The original construction
of this causeway was funded through the sale of revenue
bonds and new revenue bonds were issued in 1989 to
finance the construction of badly needed roadway improvements.
Toll
revenues are pledged to repay the bonds, and are
also used
for maintaining the causeway, drawbridge and other
bridges throughout the Town.
The
current cash fare for a two-axle vehicle is $1.00,
but there are other convenient ways of purchasing trips
across the causeway. For frequent travelers in two-axle
vehicles, BayPass transponders are available for
advance purchase of trips in quantity at a discount
price (the "commuter pass") or for unlimited
trips (the "annual pass") from October 1st to
September 30th for a flat fee. The annual pass can now
be prorated quarterly when you open a new account. For details on these
discount fares, please contact the toll plaza staff at
305-892-1422. The toll plaza office is open from 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m, Monday through Friday.
The
portion of the Causeway which crosses the Intracoastal
Waterway includes a drawbridge to allow the passage of
marine vessels. Between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
the bridge opens to marine traffic only on the quarter
hour and three-quarters hour, with exceptions required
by the U.S. Coast Guard for tugboats, scheduled vessels,
and vessels declaring an emergency. For those
exceptions, the draw span is required to be opened at
any time. Horizontal clearance through the span is 80
feet, and vertical clearance is 13 feet. The channel
depth is 10 feet. The maximum weight load for land
vehicles crossing the Broad Causeway is now 6 tons due
to recently imposed weight restriction on one its
bridges.
